Create your own customised motivation map

The White Nile When explorers of old set out on their journeys they would always try to get hold of a map of the territory they were about to enter. They would talk to people who had been there before and ask, where were the swamps and deserts? Where was the fresh water and plentiful food? Where were the helpful and the dangerous people? Even a sketch map was better than no map at all.

By the time you reach the end of Inner Leadership you will have chosen the best way forward for you now and described it as an inspiring vision.

No one has ever tried to create this vision before, not in the way you have defined it, and not in the circumstances you now face. You are entering new territory. So, like the explorers of old, you will find it useful to take with you a map of the territory you are about to enter.

And in this case it is a map that shows the inner landscape of your own motivation, inspiration, and enthusiasm.

The final chapter of Inner Leadership enables you to draw such a map. It is composed of the key features of the territory you have explored throughout the book:

  • The inspiring vision you are working to create
  • Why this matters — your wider purpose
  • How you are going to make your journey — your values
  • How this contributes to what it will take for you to have lived a worthwhile life (and what you are doing each day, week, or month to achieve this)
  • Facts and quotes that inspire you and draw you forward
  • People (stakeholders) who are essential to achieving your vision, and what they each need from you
  • The methods you will use to keep yourself centred, grounded, and connected with your priorities as you move forward

By pulling together these key landmarks you create a map that you can refer to when you get lost — something you can use to reorient yourself before continuing on your journey. Your own, customised map for daily motivation and alignment.

And then, like the explorers of old, you can add more detail as you go.

Do you have a clear map of your own inspiration: what it is, why it matters, and what you are doing to create it in your life? Would you like to have such a map?
